Biography
The Dutch etcher Marius Bauer was the artist who began the trend amongst British printmakers towards depicting the orient. His highly distinctive etched style shows a rapid, sketchy technique, quite divorced from that of his English contemporaries. Marius Bauer’s work presents a mixture of the real with the imaginary; however, it was the fact that he actually travelled to the orient to seek out new subjects that was to inspire the English printmakers who followed in his footsteps.
